How I Assist

As a respected Doula, I pride myself in providing you and your partner with care, understanding, information and support throughout, during, and after the birthing process. Our initial meeting will help me tailor my packages to fit your needs, as every pregnancy is different. To schedule an initial consultation, or to learn more about my practice, please contact me.

Continuous support

I am available for questions and concerns from the time you hire me, not just the last 4 weeks.

Hand on Bump

First prenatal visit

Together we will go through your wishes, fears, and questions.  I go over interventions that we may encounter and how we will be making those decisions.  I want every decision you make leaving you feeling confident and not rushed into a decision. I will leave with you feeling confident in how and what to have on your birth plan.

Pregnancy

Second prenatal visit

During our second visit we will go over your completed birth plan.  I will then go through my Doula bag and show you everything that is in there.  Every item is for you and your labor.  We will go over all the comfort measures we will be using and practice some of those.  We will go over any last minute questions you may have.  I am on call for you from 36 weeks until you give birth.

Expectant Couple

Postpartum Support

1 postpartum visit.  Each client has different needs and we will discuss your specific needs.  We will also go over your birth experience to process at this time.  We will make sure your nursing journey is going well and do any troubleshooting that might be needed.  We will go over how you are healing physically and emotionally.

Why I am a Birth Doula

WhyI am a Doula

The experience of pregnancy and birth has evolved over the years, especially in today’s modern era. I believe that the need for caring, sensitive and knowledgeable support during this time is becoming more and more apparent. I see every pregnancy and birth as a miracle and as a certified doula, I feel honored to be able to contribute my expertise to women and families in the greater Dallas area.

I have been blessed with two amazing boys.  Through my own journey with childbirth and motherhood I realized my calling in this world was to be a birth doula.  I look back on my birth experiences and wish I had been more informed.  My first son was born at the age of 24 and I knew the bare minimum about childbirth.  My own mother had passed away and the only information I got was from my work colleagues at the time.  I wish that I had had the internet!  At the time, you went to the hospital, asked no questions and assumed your doctor had your best interest at heart.

My doctor explained to me that I was a few days past my due date and that meant I needed to be induced.  I went to the hospital the next morning and was told that an epidural was the best way to do it.  I agreed, thinking that they were giving me the best advice.  Thank goodness I did not have any complications but the experience itself was awful.

I had several nurses that did things to my body without asking and acted like I was doing something wrong the whole time.  They did not listen to me or care how I was feeling for that matter.  My Doctor was supposed to be the best in Dallas and every interaction with him was less than desirable. He did not inform me or get consent on anything and everything that in retrospect was not necessary.

Afterward I felt as though I had been hit by a truck and the recovery was long. I was also left to figure out breastfeeding all on my own.

By the time my second child was on the way 3 years later, I was determined to have a different experience.  I wanted an unmedicated birth and knew that was near impossible at the time.  I went to childbirth classes and read every book I could get my hands on.  I decided the only way to get the experience that I wanted was to have a birth with a Midwife.  In 2003 the hospitals did not allow midwives to practice like they do now in hospitals and the birth centers were over an hour away. I met and chose my midwife which offered home births. I knew then that that was the right decision for me.

I thought that by having a midwife I would be coached and nurtured through the process in the comfort of my own home.  In the end, my birth experience was fantastic but it was hard.  My midwife was exceptional as she was making sure my baby and I were physically safe. I felt very well taken care of as far as my health and my baby's health.

My misconception of having a midwife was that they are there to make sure that everything is medically fine.  Their responsibility was not to guide you through the process.  During labor I felt as though the people in my birth space were staring at me from the corner of the room while I was left alone to figure out how to deal with everything.  There was no one telling me that I was doing a good job, suggesting positions so the surges wouldn't be so intense, and helping me focus.

I remember in transition, when I could not vocalize what I was thinking and all of my focus was to get through each wave.  My hair was in my face and I was very hot.  I kept thinking if only someone would put my hair up I would be fine.  Because I was focusing so much I could not get the words out of my mouth.  No one was helping me cool off or simply put my hair up for me.  They were all staring with huge eyes that scared me at the time. I had to rely on my instincts alone to get into the best position possible that felt best. Because my second labor was only 5 hours it was very intense.  I remember in those moments feeling very alone and not supported physically or emotionally. After my son was born at 3AM everyone went home, my husband went to sleep and I was wide awake from the euphoria  of having just gone through a monuments journey by myself. It was through this experience that I wanted to fill this void for other women in labor and childbirth.

I put my passion on hold to raise my boys at home .  Once they became teenagers I went back to work.  I loved working but felt that I was not fulfilling my passion and calling.  I decided it was time and became a certified doula with DONA.

My goal is to help women feel empowered, educated, and in control over what is happening to their body as well as her baby during childbirth.   My experience in having both a medicated induced hospital birth and a home birth with a midwife, I understand the challenges and benefits to both choices.

I am non-judgmental and support any and all choices you make as a parent as long as it is okay with your provider.  I believe childbirth is a profound and powerful time in a woman's life.  My goal is to support what you want your birth experience to be.  I strive to be a source of comfort, knowledge, and be your cheerleader.

Birth is an event in a woman's life that deserves to be handled with care, respect, and compassion.  Every birth is different and special.  I will guide you through your options all while helping you have the birth you desire.  Birth is a natural event that our bodies are made for.

I believe every woman should have a doula where you are continually supported by a compassionate team of people that listen to your needs, is trained and deeply cares for you and your baby's well being.  I work with doctors and midwives in hospitals, birth centers, and home births. I love what I do and look forward to meeting your expanding family.  I will be honored to be included in your birth space.

I cannot begin to say enough wonderful things about Misty.  She was encouraging and supportive from the first moment we met.  I felt acknowledged, heard, and a priority the entire time.  This included during pregnancy, labor, birth, recovery and even weeks after.  Misty listened to what was important to me and never pushed any of her own ideas my way.  It was all about me, which in this situation is supossed to be!  Misty is a wealth of information but not just in the words she said.  She was always willing to send research, sources, videos and more so I could explore the content and then make my own decisions.  Misty put my whole family at ease and showed them support.  My husband, my 7 year old daughter and even my Mom!  She was part of the team always and did an amazing job keeping things flowing smoothly and therefore I could focus on my only job - birthing this baby.  I highly recommend her to anyone who is to birth a baby, regardless of your methods or birth plan.  She will support you the entire way.  I sincerely could not have had the unmedicated, hospital birth in a peaceful confident way without her.  If i ever have another baby she will be there!!

Misty was exactly what I needed in my labor.  She never left my side and advocated for me every step of the way.  Even though I needed a caesarean section that was unavoidable she was right there with me in the OR.  She immediately took pictures of my baby and ran back to show me a close up picture of her.  She executed the music I wanted played during it to distract me.  She made me and my husband feel supported through the entire process and made sure my husband was included in the OR with our baby.  I cannot recommend Misty enough!
