Why You Need A Doula

The word doula is a greek word meaning women's servant.  Throughout history women in labor have been cared for by other women in childbirth.  The term doula is a trained and experienced labor companion.  A doula provides emotional, physical, and emotional support to a mom who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth.

During labor I will give you continuous emotional support, physical comfort measures and education about the birth process and procedures.  I also act as a health advocate for you and your partner and help communicate your specific wishes to the doctors, nurses, and or midwives.  I will ensure that everyone involved with your birth to know your personalized birth plan.  My goal is to empower and comfort you so that you can have the birth that you desire.  Research shows that without this level of support, mothers are more likely to use pain medication, give birth by cesarean, and are dissatisfied with or negatively rate their birth experience.  Doula assisted mothers are four times less likely to have a low birth rate baby, two times likely to experience a birth complication involving mom or baby and significantly more likely to initiate breastfeeding.  Every mother should have access to a doula while giving birth.
